Mini Book Reviews – A Catch Up

In a feeble attempt to go into the New Year with a clean slate and no outstanding book reviews, here’s a quick round up of some of my recent reads.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

Sarah Waters is slowly becoming one of my favourite authors and whilst I liked this book, it didn’t blow me away.  The writing and characterisation is as you’d expect but I was expecting it to be scary…and it isn’t.  There was only one scene in the book that actually gave me goose bumps.  The recent movie is a good adaptation despite all the changes.

Mad Blood Stirring by Simon Mayo

I used to live on the very edge of Dartmoor so loved this bleak setting, the prison being very much a character in its own right.  The whole theatre group and performing of Romeo and Juliet – had I not known that this was actually based upon actual events would have thought it ridiculous.  Very much enjoyed Simon’s version of events and his writing.  If you like Kate Summerscale read this.

Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie

You know how I’m a sucker for an Agatha Christie and her books are very much my go to when having a bit of a slump.  This is one of my favourite TV adaptations, the one with the very suave (very young) Anthony Andrews, so to read this after seeing that TV movie so many times was a bit strange.  Good to see they kept all the names in the movie the same as the book although the plot isn’t quite the same.  Even though I knew who’d done it, I couldn’t even pick out the clues, love it! 😉

The Old You by Louise Voss

Bloody good psychological thriller if you ask me.  Gripping from the outset to the end, never losing its pace to a climatic ending.  A teensy weensy bit far-fetched in places but a solid 4/4.5* read.  Would make a good TV drama and Anna Friel would probably get cast as Lynn.

Have you read any of these books or are they are on your reading list? Do let me know.

I’m hoping to get back into my blogging properly in 2019 and make a real effort.

Well done for getting your reviews done in 2018! I have some queued already but not written up properly… Must get round to it 🙂 So glad you enjoyed Mad Blood Stirring – as you say, I’d have thought the entire King Dick storyline preposterous if it weren’t true! Apparently they’re working on a film adaptation which should be interesting.
