Alice Lane has everything; a wonderful fiancé, a responsible job and a lovely flat in Chelsea, but after she has a bra fitting her life goes tits up. Homeless, and with just a sparkling engagement ring as a memory of her previous life Alice accepts a live-in farm manager s job and discovers that things actually can get worse. Come with Alice as she makes her hilarious career change and struggles to cope with her moody employer, Edward. But can Alice turn her back on romance and resist the dashing Dominic or will the past come back to surprise her?
This is the first of Lynda Renham’s novels that I’ve read and I hope it won’t be the last. This is a rom com in a book and is hugely entertaining, I read it in just over 24 hours which I think is the quickest I’ve ever read a book – combination of an amusing plot and not much on the tele.
It’s a light, easy read filled with laughable moments that have probably happened to most of us at some point or other and there are some great one liners!
The characters are all (well mostly) likeable. Alice is a sweet character, if not a bit naive sometimes but just trying to see the best in everyone (not a bad quality). Edward comes across as a grumpy farmer but his reasons are revealed later. Charlie is a pillock and well Cas, he is just hilarious…very Alan Carr-esque! There are other secondary characters that support really well also.
This very much reminded me of Bridget Jones’ Diary and I could easy visualise Renee Zellwegger in Alice’s role with Hugh Grant as Dominic and Colin Firth as Edward!! They have that type of rivalry going on.
The swapping of points of view later in the book was a bit surprising and a bit confusing when it first happened. I believe it was “Lucy, short for Lucinda, but everyone calls me Luce” who started it off and I think then all the main characters have a go in the spotlight.
Overall, it’s fun and light-hearted which you’ll enjoy if you like chick lit and rom com’s and are a fan of Bridget Jones.
Many thanks to Lynda for sending me a copy to read and review.
